Hey! My Mum Wrote a Book

Here's the book that my Mum just wrote (well - published - it took over two years to research and write):

Called "Purpose and Passion: Celebrating 50 years of Carlingford Baptist Church" the book is about the Church that my Mum and Dad attend. It's located in the northern suburbs of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The book covers the history from well before I was born - when there was the idea of a new congregation in a young and growing area of Sydney right up until the 50th Anniversary this year.

Reading (my signed copy!) was interesting. Apart from long lost, some very fond, memories of various people that I know from my youth being revived - what I find most intriguing are stories of the early community. "Working Bees", for instance. (I haven't heard that phrase for such a long time). For the uninitiated, a "Working Bee" was where the congregation got together for a day every so often to work on various parts of the church property, build, paint, tear down, clean and so on. It seems though, in my lifetime, faster and busier lives seem to have replaced - by necessity really - the Community of the Church with the Business of the Church.

The other interesting that struck me in the book is the often seemingly perilous financial decisions that needed to be made - to take loans, to employ staff, to buy much needed property cope with a rapidly expanding congregation and to give money to the needy. However, these were made with a spirit of challenge and hope - the epitome of the classic "leap of faith". In retrospect, and considering the growth of the area into a moderately wealthy area, I guess they don't look nearly as dramatic as they must have been at the time.

Just thought I'd mention it.
