And Another Thing - Postal (Zip) Codes

Or for those not in the RoW: Zip codes.

Attn: Software Designers - particularly Web Site Designers. (This includes you guys who write Apple Address Book too - with your software that makes a mess of trying to "fix" addresses with no Postal code but with other numbers elsewhere in the address when importing).

Please realise the following...

  • Not everyone knows what a Zip code is. Yes - it's true. Just today, someone asked me what a Zip code was. It's not the first time I've been asked either.
  • Not all countries have 5 digit numeric Postal codes, nor do they have 5 digits, a hyphen and then another 4 digits, nor do they have 2 sets of 3 Alphanumerics separated by a space.

And here's the big one...

  • Some countries do not have Postal codes at all. Yup. Nothing. Blank. Nada. Zip - so to speak. No concept of it. Amazingly, the mail still gets through without them.

A quick Google search yielded about 14 Million pages on the subject - the first 10 I quickly looked at were completely relevant to the subject of dealing with Postal codes. There really is no excuse for ignorance.

So please stop making Postal codes compulsory when entering addresses on in Software and Web Forms and so on. You just look ignorant. Not only that, you're losing and frustrating customers because of mindless stupidity.
